Financial Literacy Program ("FL!P")

Objectives and Curriculum

The program's primary objective is to enhance participants' financial literacy through a carefully structured curriculum. The curriculum covers fundamental financial concepts, including budgeting, saving, investing, credit management, debt reduction, and retirement planning. Real-life case studies and interactive simulations are integrated to engage learners and demonstrate the application of financial principles in various scenarios.

Here are some of our partnerships :

American Bankers Association (ABA)

The Bank partners with the American Bankers Association to participate in programs and campaigns to educate students and citizens in our community about financial topics. Programs include: Teach Children to Save™:  an educational initiative that promotes financial literacy among young students in grades k-8. Through interactive activities, educational resources, and classroom presentations, the program teaches children essential money management skills, such as saving, budgeting, and making smart financial decisions. Get Smart About Credit™:  an educational initiative that promotes financial literacy among individuals, particularly young adults. Through this program, participants learn about important aspects of credit management, such as understanding credit reports, building credit responsibly, and avoiding common pitfalls. Safe Banking for Seniors™:   an educational initiative that provides valuable resources and educational materials to help older adults protect their finances and avoid scams. It empowers seniors with knowledge and tools to recognize fraudulent activities, safeguard their assets, and make informed financial decisions. Banks Never Ask That – Fraud Prevention: an educational initiative that aims to empower consumers to recognize and avoid common scams and frauds. Through this program, the ABA highlights important information about banking security and privacy, emphasizing that legitimate banks will never ask for sensitive personal information such as passwords, PINs, or account numbers via unsolicited emails, phone calls, or text messages. Practice Safe Checks: the most recent educational program that teaches consumers how to protect themselves from check fraud. Through this program, consumers learn key tips on secure check writing, recognizing scams, and safeguarding their personal information.

Junior Achievement (JA)

The Bank partners with Junior Achievement (JA) in three kinds of programs: JA Program:  five 45-minute sessions covering a specific theme for a certain grade level. JA in a Day: a high-impact way to deliver JA's lessons for a particular grade level all on the same day. JA Titan:  a virtual simulation program that helps high school students learn about business.

Career-Focused Organizations

The bank partners with organizations like Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) and Future Professionals of Aroostook (FPA). Through these partnerships, we provide valuable insights into career opportunities within financial institutions, including those offered by Katahdin Trust. Our program includes various components: Our dedicated employees visit different schools to share insights into their roles and responsibilities at the bank. Students have the opportunity to visit our operations and administration building, gaining a behind-the-scenes understanding of our operations. We offer job shadowing opportunities, allowing students to immerse themselves in specific departments and gain firsthand experience working at Katahdin Trust.

FL!P Pillars

Community Engagement FL!P caters to diverse audiences, including students, young professionals, families, and senior citizens. Customized modules are designed to address the specific financial challenges faced by each group, ensuring relevance and practicality for participants at different stages of life.

Expert Guidance To deliver top-notch financial education, the Program collaborates with knowledgeable bankers. Participants benefit from their expertise and insights, gaining access to credible information that helps them make sound financial decisions.

Measuring Impact The Program is committed to measuring its impact effectively. Regular feedback surveys are conducted to evaluate the program's effectiveness and gather suggestions for improvement. Each session is tracked and documented. Additionally, any qualifying Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) eligible presentations are noted accordingly.

Interactive Learning Experiences We believe in making financial literacy engaging and interactive. That's why we design activities that allow participants to actively engage with the content rather than just passively receive it. From BINGO games to scavenger hunts, we offer a variety of fun and interactive experiences suitable for different ages and stages of financial understanding.
